Brazil set dates for Daylight Saving Time for Summer 2009-2010
The Brazilian states (and their respective capitals) of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre), Santa Catarina (Florianópolis), Paraná (Curitiba), São Paulo (São Paulo), Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro), Espírito Santo (Vitória), Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte), Goiás (Goiânia), Mato Grosso (Cuiabá), Mato Grosso do Sul (Campo Grande) and Distrito Federal (Brasilia) will observe Daylight Saving Time (DST) as from October 18, 2009 (midnight between Saturday and Sunday), when the clocks will be adjusted one hour forward, and set back one hour (midnight between Saturday and Sunday) on February 21, 2010.
There are different time zones in Brazil, but only those in the mentioned Regions, where standard time is GMT - 3, will be changed to GMT -2 during the period of the DST, thereby affecting all Brazilian sea ports south of Praia Mole (Vitoria).
The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy announced that it expects a reduction in energy demand of 4.4% in the Southeast and Central-West Regions (1,780MW) and 4.5% (490 MW) in the South Region. The overall saving would be circa of 0.5%, that is 450GWh in the Southeast and Central-West Regions and 130GWh in the South Region.
